Coveting Copper: One-of-a-Kind Sinks Debut at KBIS 2016

Published On February 11, 2016

The glow of copper continues to shine through handcrafted, one-of-a-kind finishing techniques found throughout Thompson Traders’ new collection of sinks, introduced at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS), the industry’s premier annual event.

Introductions include a selection as varied as a jeweler’s case.

Alejandra Ochoa de Thompson, the founder and creative director of Thompson Traders, took inspiration from jewelry in her interpretation of the company’s Antique Satin Gold finish, a complement to the rose gold phenomenon found everywhere from the distinct Cartier rose gold watch, to the current palette of home décor accents.

No two sinks are alike. And, every piece perpetuates the coppersmithing legacy of Santa Clara del Cobre, Mexico. The process begins by heating copper into a pancake-shaped ingot. The ingot is heated in a fire then hammered into shape. After the metal has cooled, the process is repeated—over and over—until the company’s coppersmiths have achieved the desired design and finish.

Alejandra Ochoa de Thompson, the founder and creative director of Thompson Traders, grew up near the renowned copper-crafting region of Santa Clara del Cobre, Mexico, where generations of coppersmiths have used time-honored, metal-crafting techniques for centuries. Traditions of her native Mexico inspire many of Alejandra’s creations, including copper tubs, which can be found in Mexican homes.

Thompson Traders personally guides the creation of its pure copper pieces at its facility in Santa Clara del Cobre. Its lifetime finishes prevent the naturally occurring patina that changes copper’s appearance over time.
